সাগর বা মহাসাগরের চলাচলকারি জাহাজের নিরাপত্তার জন্য সাগর বা মহাসাগরের গভীরতা জানা অত্যন্ত প্রয়োজনীয় জিনিস গভীর সমুদ্রের তলদেশে প্রতিফলিত শব্দের সাহায্যে সমুদ্রের গভীরতা  নির্ণয় করা হয় এই কাজের জন্য যে যন্ত্র ব্যবহার করা হয় তাকে ফ্যাদোমিটার বা ইকোগ্রাফ বলে। সমুদ্রের তলদেশ থেকে প্রতিফলিত হয়ে ফিরে আসার জন্য এ ধরনের একটি ইউনিট এর শব্দ উৎপাদনের জন্য একটি শব্দ প্রতিশব্দ উৎপাদক রয়েছে এ যন্ত্রে একটি অংশে স্বয়ক্রিয় ভাবে ক্ষণিক শব্দের সম্পূর্ণ ভ্রমণ কাল লিপিবদ্ধ করা হয় পানিতে শব্দের বেগ এবং একে দ্বারা চিহ্নিত করা হয় এসময় জাহাজটি কর্তৃক অতিক্রান্ত দূরত্ব হলে পরবর্তী সমীকরণ থেকে সমুদ্রের গভীরতা নির্ণয় করা যায়।

It is very important to know the depth of the sea for safe inavigation. The ship uses reflection of sound in doing this. The device which is used for this purpose is known as fathometer/Echograph. One unit of the device has a sound (ultrasound) generator to produce sound which is sent through water for reflection from bottom of the sea. Total time (t) of journey of the sound pulse is recorded in designated by V. During this time, the movement of the ship be d, then the depth of the sea (h) can be found from the following equation.

The process is continuous and depth of the sea is continuously graphed of paper for use of navigation
