জাহাজ ও বিমান কর্তৃক বাহিত সার্ভাইবল রেডিও জরুরী উদ্ধার কাজ সহজতর করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। এগুলিকে সাধারণত আন্তর্জাতিক দূর্দশাগ্রস্থ কম্পাংকে ট্রান্সমিট করতে সক্ষম করে ডিজাইন করা হয়। সামুদ্রিক ব্যবস্থাপনাকে বৈশ্বিক সামুদ্রিক দূর্দশাগ্রস্থ নিরাপত্তা ব্যবস্থার অধীনে প্রমিত হয়েছে। ১৯১২ সালে আর.এম.এস. টাইটানিকের ডুবে যাওয়ার পর থেকে দুর্ঘটনায় বেঁচে যাওয়াদের উদ্ধার কাজে সাহায্য করতে রেডিওর ব্যবহার পুরোপুরি সামনে চলে এসেছি। ১৯২০ সালের দিকে স্পার্ক ফাঁক ট্রান্সমিটার যেমন মার্কনী টাইপ-২৪১ দিয়ে লাইফ বোট সজ্জিত করা হত। মোর্স কোড ব্যবহার করে ঐ সময়ের আন্তর্জাতিক  দূর্দশাগ্রস্থ কম্পাংক ৫০০ KHZ  এ এগুলি পরিচালিত হত। এই কম্পাংকটির দূর পাল্লার ভূমি তরঙ্গ গমনে কারণগত বড় সুবিধা ছিল এবং টাইটানিকের ডুবে যাওয়ার পর থেকে সমুদ্রের সকল বড় বড় জাহাজগুলিকে সর্বদা মনিটর করা হত। তৎসত্ত্বেও, এর তরঙ্গদৈর্ঘ্য ৬০০ মিটার হওয়ার দরুন, ভালভাবে গ্রহনের জন্য একটি লম্বা এন্টেনার প্রয়োজন পড়ত। ১/৪ তরঙ্গদৈর্ঘ্য মাত্রার লম্বার তার অধিকাংশক্ষেত্রে ঘুড়ি বা বেলুন দ্বারা ধারণ করা হত। প্রযুক্তিটি সাধারণ যোগাযোগের জন্য নিষিদ্ধ করার অনেক পরেও লাইফ বোটে স্পার্ক ফাঁকের ব্যবহার অব্যাহত ছিল।

Survival radios are carried by ships and aircraft to facilitate rescue in an emergency. They are generally designedto transmit on international distress frequencies. Maritime systems have been standardized under the Global Maritime Distress Safety System. The use of radio to aid in rescuing survivor of accidents at sea came to the forefront after the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. Lifeboats were equipped with spark gap transmitters such as the Marconi Type 241, circa 1920. These operated using Morse code on 500KHZ, the international distress frequency at the time. This frequency had the advantage of long rangew due to ground wave propagation and was constantly monitored by all large ships at sea after the Titanic sinking. However, due to the it’s wavelength of 600 meters, a long antenna was required to achieve good range. Long wires on the order of ¼ wave lengths held yp by kites or balloons were often used. Spark gap continued to be used in lifeboats long after the technology was banned for general communication.
