চাঁদ পৃথিবীর একমাত্র প্রাকৃতিক উপগ্রহ। চাঁদের নিজস্ব কোন আলো নেই। সূর্যের আলো চাঁদের পৃষ্ঠে প্রতিফলিত হয় বলে আমরা চাঁদকে দেখতে পাই। আমরা সর্বদা চাঁদের একটিমাত্র পৃষ্ঠকে দেখতে পাই । অন্যপৃষ্ঠ সর্বদাই অন্ধাকারাচ্ছন্ন থাকে। চাঁদে ‘শান্ত সাগর’ নামে একটি সাগর রয়েছে।
